Our goals are very simple
- No calving issues (we are so happy – the Angus breed has almost zero calving issues)
- Good growth (we try to breed animals in the top 10% of the Angus breed for growth)
- Good, solid, carcass
- marbling (the biggest influencer of taste)
- Good docility – we cull any animal unless they have very good docility
If we are selecting a bull to AI our best cows – we also want a few other things (under the skin):
- balanced fats (not too high or low)
- Good eye muscle area – we want good steaks at the other end
- Not too high “mature cow weight” – an animal should not keep growing once mature
- Good structure and feet. We want good functional feet that will never give any issues. We don’t want to be preoccupied with perfect feet though. There are far more important traits than perfectly balanced toes!
- Definitely high marbling
